Vent hoods serve an important purpose in a kitchen. They remove the smoke, steam, grease, and small particles that are produced during cooking through a vent. The hood keeps the area around the cooktop clean, and it also keeps the ambiant air cleaner. You will have many styles, shapes, sizes, and colors of vent hoods to choose from including those are designed for both residential or commercial use.

Vent hoods are not all installed the same way. The can be installed inside the cabinet for a downdraft, on the wall or on the ceiling. The arrangement of your kitchen and location of your cooking surface will determine what type of installation you will need.

Less sophisticated hoods filter the air and then send the air back into the room. Better and more expensive hoods absolutely need to be vented to the outside.

Before Installation

Before you install your vent hood, there are a few things that you need to consider. Do you have the appropriate electrical connections and wiring available. Take a close look at whatever you just bought to make sure it has everything it was supposed to come with. A professional installer will make short work of that.

The Dos

-Hoods should be vented vertically if possible, but there must be ventilation going outside either through the roof or a side wall. Hoods can also vent directly outside through a side wall.

-Use the appropriate metal, such as galvanized metal or steel.

-HVAC tape will be needed to connect all the metal joints.

-Remember to clean your duct on a regular basis, as accumulated dirt will affect the air flow.

The Don’ts

-Never allow your hood to vent into space between floors, into the basement or the attic.

-Put the range hood the right distance above the cooking surface.

-Watch for changing diameters of the ductwork between the hood itself and the ventilation.

If you vent through the roof, you will need a roof cap. Installing a hood and its venting is not a simple job, as it requires not just skill but also the tools for handling metal.
