One of the reasons why kitchens used to be separate from the rest of the house and with a door that could close is on account of odours. But there are things you can do to help keep your home odour-free even if you have an open-concept kitchen.

Here are some of our tips for keeping the kitchen odour-free.

Hood for Ventilation

If you are cooking some of the notoriously stinky foods like broccoli or cabbage, be sure to use the ventilation in your hood. That really cuts down on odours and also vents the steam out of the kitchen.

You can also open some windows, and enable some cross-ventilation to air out the kitchen during and after heavy cooking. Fresh air always helps and will whisk away any odours.

Garbage

Take your garbage out more than necessary if you have some things in the can that smell bad. Something foul smelling in the garbage can make a room smell bad in a hurry.

Also, see that your garbage can has a tight fitting lid. This is especially important in the summer if the kitchen gets hot.

Fruits and Vegetables

Keep your eye on any fruits and vegetables that you leave to ripen on the counter and check for freshness daily. One bad orange will make a whole room smell badly.

Kitchen Cleanliness

A freshly cleaned kitchen smells good. There is no doubt about that. Keeping your kitchen ultra clean will help to keep the whole house smelling fresh.

Good Smells

You can also do some things in the kitchen that smell good and make the whole house smell good. Cinnamon, for example, makes people feel good. There have been a number of peer-reviewed studies that support this. So, assuming that you like the smell of cinnamon, baking some occasional gingersnap cookies or cinnamon buns will permeate the house with a great smell that improves everyone’s mood at the same time.

These are just a few tips to help keep your kitchen sweet smelling all year round.
