There are several different types of gas fireplaces. If you are considering buying one, here, below, is what you need to know.

Gas or Propane?

When one hears “gas fireplace” most people think of natural gas. However, it is possible to have a propane fireplace. However, the cost of running a propane fireplace will be several multiples of running a natural gas fireplace. So, keep the budget in mind if you are considering a propane one. Also, if you have natural gas, you will have a continuous flow. If you have a propane fireplace, you will have to regularly refill your (giant) propane tank.

Insert?

If you already have a wood-burning fireplace, it can be converted to a gas fireplace. This would require a different type of unit than one where there is no existing fireplace or chimney.

Ventless

There are gas fireplaces that do not require venting, but they are not allowed everywhere. These fireplaces are extremely efficient, so if the space is large enough, the little bit of exhaust can vent right into the room. These fireplaces, however, are the exception to the rule. Most gas fireplaces require some kind of venting.

Size

The next consideration is size. The question is how much space would you be trying to heat? The larger the space, the larger the consumption of natural gas, and the bigger the unit you would need. Also, obviously, larger gas fireplaces cost more than smaller ones.

Whatever you choose, gas fireplaces are here to stay. Natural gas fireplaces are inexpensive to run and create much less pollution than wood-burning fireplaces which are starting to be outlawed in some jurisdictions. It’s also very convenient to turn on your fireplace with the flip of a switch.
