Most people, if they can afford it, like to have “self-cleaning” as a feature with their oven. There is, however, today, a new feature called “easy-clean.” So, what is easy-clean and how is it different from self-cleaning? That is what we want to talk about in today’s blog article.

Self-Cleaning Cycle

If your oven has a self-cleaning cycle, that is a cycle that takes several hours. The oven locks and heats up to maybe 800 degrees Fahrenheit or more, stays that way for a while, then cools off. While the oven is very hot, that heat alone, without chemicals, will burn off most stains or bits that have burned onto your oven, in effect cleaning it.

After the cycle is over, and the oven cools, you have to wipe out the residual dust and powder to finish the clean. Also, while the self-cleaning is happening there may be smoke and/or an odor emanating from the oven. This is normal.

Easy-Clean Cycle

Now, some ovens are starting to have an easy-clean cycle. This is a different type of cleaning cycle that is designed more to loosen dirt in the oven. The cycle runs much cooler than a self-cleaning cycle does and uses water to create steam. You will see steam but no smoke.

This cycle is also much shorter—typically 20 minutes. The cycle will not clean everything in the oven like the self-cleaning oven does, but it will help to get the oven ready for a deeper clean.

There are a couple of disadvantages of the self-cleaning cycle. First, it ties up the oven for hours. It often puts out plenty of smoke if the oven is dirty. And it uses a lot of electricity. The most common reason why ovens need repair is because of something related to the self-cleaning cycle because the oven gets so hot, that sometimes little things go wrong. So, these are just a few things to be aware of when running your self-cleaning cycle. Use it sparingly and try the easy-clean cycle if you have one.
