While most household appliances have electrical requirements, at the very least requiring electricity to run their controls, some appliances require natural gas for their operation. In today’s blog we will be looking at the gas requirements for most common household appliances.
What common household appliances require natural gas?
The most common household appliances that make use of natural gas are furnaces, water heaters, ranges, ovens, fireplaces and clothes dryers. Natural Gas can also be utilized in refrigerators, dishwashers and outdoor grills.
What are the general gas requirements of common household appliances?
Every appliance in your household that makes use of gas has a BTU (British Thermal Unit) rating. The standard size gas connection for most appliances is a ¾ inch gas line. This gas line can usually supply between 70,000 to 200,000 BTUs per hour. Shorter lines allow for greater capacity while long gas lines reduce it. If you are installing multiple gas using appliances on the same gas line, you will need to make sure that the combined BTU ratings of the appliances do not exceed the BTU rating of the gas connection. Generally larger gas using appliances, such as a gas range, will require their own dedicated gas line. If you overload your gas lines, it can lead to reductions in the performance and efficiency of your appliance as well as posing safety risks.
What are the BTU requirements of Common Household Appliances?
A four-burner gas stove will generally require around 65,000 BTUs per hour, roughly 10,000 BTUs per burner and 25,000 BTUs for the oven. The exact BTU output may vary based on brand and model. Gas Dryers usually require around 22,000 BTUs per hour but the exact BTU output may vary based on brand and model. Most home heating systems require somewhere between 40,000 BTUs and 90,000 BTUs per hour depending on room size, insulation and climate.
We hope we have been able to provide you with a useful guide to the gas requirements for common household appliances.
