If you are building or redoing a kitchen, you may be wondering how high the hood fan should be installed. The answer to that question is “it depends.” Hood fans will come with manufacturer recommendations for the height of installation, but there are some guidelines we will talk about in our blog article today.

Electric Stove

Hood fans over an electric stove are usually mounted between 20” and 24” above the stovetop. However, what the manufacturer recommends should trump the guidelines. Also, within that range, depending on the height of the person doing the most cooking, and the kitchen designer, you may want your hood fan slightly higher or lower within the recommended range.

Gas Stove

Hood fans above a gas stove are mounted slightly higher than over an electric stove. These hood fans are typically mounted between 24” and 30” above the stovetop. However, like mentioned above, depending on the cook’s height or the design, within that range you may prefer something slightly higher or lower.

Outside

Hoods mounted over an outdoor stovetop in an outdoor kitchen are always mounted somewhat higher. These are usually between 36” and 42” above the stovetop.

Other

Also, professional quality hoods for a professional-style kitchen are also usually required to be higher than normal because they are more powerful. That is why one has to go by what the manufacturer recommends.
